I used to blog on MySpace quite a bit. It was probably one of the biggest helpful factors in me getting through a spot of significant unemployment (I was freelancing, which I have now learned is basically like being unemployed; also, there was that horrible WGA strike that shut down a lot of work and further hammered us all into tough times).

Blogging on MySpace was a great intro to blogging because (eye roll, chuckle) everyone was on MySpace every day. I would walk down to the coffee shop, get a cup of coffee and a croissant and hammer out a short essay, anecdote, or other observation. It was great because before 10AM, even though it wasn’t much, I had accomplished something that day. It set the momentum for going home and applying to jobs in the backseat of my car, the only place I could get internet.

Two things occurred recently: One, my officemate deleted his MySpace account which reminded me that the only reason I hadn’t deleted mine was because of all those blogs, some of which I am very proud of in their humor writing; Two, I got an email from Wordpress asking me to upgrade my wordpress blog.

Every year, about this time, I jump into a fit of trying to fix up my wordpress blog, which is attached to my personal website. Every year I get a little further in figuring it all out and trying to wrestle a theme into submission, but I just fizzle. Web coding and design is just different enough from my normal technical powers to evade my enthusiasm.

So I upgraded to Wordpress 2.9 and took a look at the shambles my blog is in (no, not providing a link, trust me, there is nothing to see). I love Tumblr. This place is awesome because it is easy, fun, and encourages community. But I still really want to get that other blog into shape so that I have a place to put all the heavily visual effects nerd-outery that I love doing.

As we roll into January, I can feel that urge to get my blog-ducks in an RSS-row. Maybe it’s time to find a fresh-faced, Wordpress coder to help me get this act into shape.

And while I’m at it, my personal site could probably use a little elbow grease.

Because I think cigarette cases are really classy.

I can compensate by carrying a business card case, but it’s not the same…and I don’t do enough networking to warrant whipping out my business cards at every possible moment.

This year I have kept track of every single alcoholic drink that I have ingested into my body. What I drank, when I drank it, where I was, who I was with, and what occasion.

I am starting to sift through the data and am going to create a comprehensive infographic with it all. This is the first image I’ve generated. Clearly, I do most of my drinking during the summer months.

This is a logical sentiment, but if you’re an artist, smart money is on the fact that you will never stop being creative; whether you’re drawing, painting, sculpting, acting, doodling, scribbling, inking, coloring, molding, snapping pictures, building, gluing, cutting, pasting, writing, drinking, cooking, telling jokes with friends, driving, walking, breathing, you will find fun and art in everything.

It’s OK to never be satisfied and to keep working towards a higher artistic goal that may be high in the distant foggy mountains. The important thing is to keep climbing with whatever tools please you.
